What Is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization.
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of shaping website content so AI assistants and search features, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can pick it up and quote it as a direct answer to a question.
What AEO means in plain English
Search used to mean a list of ten blue links. Now many questions get answered on the results page or inside a chat window, before anyone visits a website. Answer engine optimization is the work of making your pages the source those answers draw from: clear questions, direct answers, and facts an AI system can lift without rewriting.
AEO is not a separate discipline from SEO. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in its AI features beyond normal search best practice. In practice, AEO is SEO with extra attention on how each answer reads when it is quoted on its own, away from the rest of the page.

Why AEO matters for a business website
When a buyer asks an assistant which roofing material suits a coastal home, or what a dental implant involves, the reply often names a few sources. Being one of them puts your business in front of that buyer at the research stage, even if they never scroll a results page. If your pages bury answers under long introductions, a tidier page from someone else gets quoted instead.
An AEO example
A plumbing company has a water heater page that opens with three paragraphs about the firm's history. The owner rewrites the top so the first sentence answers the question customers actually ask, how long an installation takes, then adds a short FAQ built from the next three questions the office hears on the phone. The page now offers clean answers that search features and chat assistants can quote.
Common AEO mistakes
- Writing a long warm-up before the actual answer, so no single sentence works as a quote.
- Chasing special AI files or markup while basics like crawling and indexing are broken.
- Opening an answer with a pronoun that makes no sense once the sentence is lifted out of context.
- Publishing FAQs nobody asks instead of the questions your sales team hears every week.
- Treating AEO as a replacement for SEO, when the same pages and signals feed both.
Rewriting answers so they can be quoted
| Customer question | Hard to quote | Easy to quote |
|---|---|---|
| How long does a water heater installation take? | Every home is different, so it depends on many factors. | Most tank water heater swaps by Northside Plumbing take one visit of about three hours. |
| Do you charge for estimates? | Contact us to learn more about our pricing. | Northside Plumbing gives free estimates inside Springfield city limits and charges a $49 trip fee outside them. |
| Do you work on weekends? | Our team is always here for you when you need us. | Northside Plumbing takes emergency calls on Saturdays and Sundays at its regular hourly rate. |
| Which areas do you cover? | We proudly serve the wider region. | Northside Plumbing covers Springfield, Chatham, Rochester and Sherman, Illinois. |
How to check whether a page gives quotable answers
- Pick a page that should answer a buyer question, and write the question down in the words customers use on the phone.
- Find the heading for that question and read only the first sentence under it: it should answer the question on its own, with no it or this that needs earlier context.
- Check the answer is real text: select it with your mouse, or press Ctrl+F in View page source, rather than finding it only inside an image, a PDF or a closed tab.
- Confirm the page is indexed with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.
- Ask the same question in Google and in two AI assistants, and note whether your page is linked or quoted.
What good looks like: Each key question has its own heading, the first sentence beneath it answers fully with specifics such as prices, times or areas, and the page is indexed.

Questions to ask your web developer
“How will you structure our service pages so each answer can be quoted on its own?”
A good answer: Question-style headings taken from real customer questions, the answer in the first sentence under each one, and specifics such as prices, timeframes and service areas written as text, not shown in images.
“Will you add special AI files or markup for answer engines?”
A good answer: Only once the basics are right. They point out that Google says its AI features need no special files or schema, and spend the budget on indexable pages with clear answers first.
AEO: common questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank pages in search results so people click through. AEO aims to have your content used as the answer itself, in a featured snippet, an AI Overview or a chatbot reply. The two overlap heavily, because answer engines mostly draw on pages that are already crawlable, indexed and trusted.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. AEO usually refers to direct answers in search features and voice or chat assistants. GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper focused on visibility inside AI-generated responses. Both reward clear, well-sourced content that is easy to quote.
Do I need special code or files for AEO?
Not for Google. Google says no special schema.org markup, AI text files or other new machine-readable files are required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Indexable pages with direct answers, structured data that matches the visible text, and sensible internal links are what count.
