What Is Topical Authority?

Topical authority is an SEO term for how thoroughly and reliably a website covers a particular subject, to the point where search engines and readers treat it as a go-to source for questions on that topic.

What topical authority means in plain English

A site with topical authority has answered the important questions in its field well, and its pages link together so the depth is easy to see. A roofing company with clear pages on every roof type, repair, material and insurance claim it handles looks far more expert than one with a single services page and a few unrelated blog posts.

There is no topical authority score in Google Search Console, and Google does not publish one. The term is shorthand used by SEO practitioners. Third-party tools that display an authority number are making their own estimate, not reading Google's data.

Topic map for a roofing company with a hub page above eight cluster pages: five live pages, three missing pages such as a cost guide and an insurance claims guide, and one off topic blog post.
Mapping one topic shows which buyer questions still have no page, and which posts drift away from what the business sells.

What Google has said about topic authority

Google has described a system it calls topic authority, built for news searches. In a post dated May 23, 2023, it said the system helps surface expert sources in specialized areas such as health, politics and finance, using signals such as how notable a publication is for a topic or place, how often others cite its original reporting, and its reputation.

That system is about news publishers, but the same idea runs through Google's helpful content guidance, which asks whether a site has a primary purpose or focus and whether its content shows first-hand expertise. Google's advice to publishers was simply to cover the topics they know well.

Why topical authority matters for a business website

Search engines and AI assistants both favor sources that answer a subject consistently and in depth. For a business, building authority on the few topics you actually sell is worth more than publishing on anything that might bring traffic. Google's guidance flags producing lots of content on many different topics, in the hope some of it ranks, as a warning sign.

How to build topical authority

  • List every question customers ask before they buy, and answer each one on the most suitable page.
  • Group related pages under a pillar page and link them together with descriptive anchor text.
  • Stay within the topics your business actually serves instead of chasing unrelated trending keywords.
  • Show first-hand experience through real projects, photos and named authors with relevant credentials.
  • Update older pages when prices, rules or methods change, so the whole topic stays accurate.

How to check how well your site covers one topic

  1. In Search Console, open Performance, then Search results, click Add filter, choose Query and enter your topic word, such as roof.
  2. Set the date range to the last 12 months and open the Pages tab to see which pages earn impressions for that topic.
  3. Open the Queries tab and list questions that get impressions but have no page written to answer them: those are your gaps.
  4. Open each topic page and check it links to the related pages with descriptive anchor text, and back to the main topic page.
  5. Note any two pages that answer the same question and plan to merge or refocus one of them.

What good looks like: Each main buyer question has one page that answers it, those pages link to each other and to a hub page, and the number of topic queries with impressions grows across the year.

Questions to ask your web developer

“How will you decide which topics we write about, and which we skip?”

A good answer: A topic map built from our services, the questions our sales team hears and our Search Console queries, with each question mapped to one page. Topics we do not sell are left out even when they have search volume.

“How will new articles connect to our service pages?”

A good answer: Every article links to its matching service page and hub page with descriptive anchor text, and older related posts are updated to link to each new one when it goes live.

Topical authority: common questions

Is topical authority a Google ranking factor?

Google has not named topical authority as a ranking factor for websites in general. It has described a topic authority system for news searches, and its guidance rewards sites with a clear focus and first-hand expertise. In practice, covering a subject thoroughly tends to help many pages rank, not just one.

What is the difference between topical authority and domain authority?

Domain authority is a score from a third-party SEO tool, based mainly on the backlinks pointing at a whole domain. Topical authority describes depth and expertise on one particular subject. A small specialist site can be the stronger source on its topic than a large, well-linked general site.

How long does it take to build topical authority?

There is no fixed timeline. It depends on how competitive the topic is, how many important questions you still need to answer, and how quickly Google crawls your new pages. Most businesses should plan for months of steady publishing and updating rather than weeks.
