What Are UTM Parameters?
UTM parameters stands for Urchin Tracking Module.
UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a web link, such as utm_source=newsletter, that tell analytics tools like Google Analytics which source, medium and campaign sent each visitor. UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module.
What UTM parameters mean in plain English
A UTM-tagged link looks like a normal web address with extra labels after a question mark. When someone clicks it, your analytics tool reads those labels and files the visit under the right campaign. The visitor lands on the same page as usual. The name comes from Urchin, an early web analytics product.
Google Analytics asks you to always use three tags: utm_source for where the visitor came from, utm_medium for the channel, and utm_campaign for the campaign name. Optional tags include utm_term for a paid keyword and utm_content to tell apart two links in the same email or ad. GA4 also accepts utm_id and utm_source_platform.

Why UTM parameters matter for a business website
Without tags, visits from email apps, QR codes, PDFs and partner sites often arrive with little detail, and reports lump them together as direct or referral traffic. Tagged links show which newsletter, ad or flyer produced the leads and sales, so you can spend more on what works and stop paying for what does not.
A UTM parameters example
A dental clinic prints a QR code on a postcard. Instead of the plain home page, the code points to example.com/whitening?utm_source=postcard&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=spring_whitening. In GA4, visits and bookings from that postcard now appear under the spring_whitening campaign, separate from search and social traffic, so the clinic can judge whether the mailing paid for itself.
Common UTM parameter mistakes
- Mixing capital letters, since GA4 treats utm_source=Google and utm_source=google as two different sources.
- Adding UTM tags to internal links between your own pages, which can replace the visitor's real source in reports.
- Leaving out utm_source, utm_medium or utm_campaign, which leaves gaps marked (not set) in reports.
- Inventing new names for the same channel each month instead of keeping a shared naming sheet.
Which utm_medium value lands in which GA4 channel
| utm_medium | Example utm_source | GA4 default channel |
|---|---|---|
| newsletter | ||
| social | Organic Social | |
| paid_social | Paid Social | |
| cpc | Paid Search | |
| display | news_site | Display |
| referral | lakeside_hardware | Referral |
| flyer | Unassigned, because no default rule matches, so read it by campaign |

Rules: lowercase only, underscores instead of spaces,
same campaign name across every channel. How to check your UTM tags are reaching GA4
- Build the link in Google's Campaign URL Builder, using the lowercase names from your naming sheet.
- Open the tagged link in a private window on your phone, as a customer would.
- In GA4, open Reports, then Realtime overview, and change the source card to show first user campaign. Your test should be listed.
- The next day, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and switch the table's first column to Session campaign.
- Look for (not set) rows or the same campaign spelled two ways, and fix the links where they are published.
What good looks like: Each campaign appears once, in lowercase, with source, medium and campaign all filled in, and sits in the GA4 channel you expected rather than Unassigned.

Questions to ask your web developer
“Will you give us a UTM naming sheet for every channel we use?”
A good answer: Yes: a shared sheet with the allowed source, medium and campaign values in lowercase, using medium values that match GA4's default channel rules, plus a link builder so nobody types tags by hand.
“Do any internal links on our site carry UTM tags?”
A good answer: No. They crawl the site to confirm internal links and the sitemap use clean URLs, and tagged addresses carry a canonical tag pointing to the clean page.
“How will QR codes and printed material be tagged?”
A good answer: Each printed piece gets its own campaign or utm_content value behind a short redirect URL, so the printed code stays simple and the destination can be changed later.
UTM parameters: common questions
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
UTM tags do not help or hurt rankings on their own. Use them on links you share in emails, ads and social posts, not on internal links or in your XML sitemap. If a tagged address ever gets indexed, a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL tells Google which version to show.
Are UTM parameters case sensitive?
Yes. Google Analytics treats utm_source=Facebook and utm_source=facebook as separate values, so one channel can be split across two rows. Use lowercase for every tag and keep a shared list of approved names so everyone on the team builds links the same way.
How do I create a UTM link?
Start with the page address, add a question mark, then join each tag with an ampersand, for example ?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=launch. Google's free Campaign URL Builder fills this in for you, and a spreadsheet of past links keeps campaign names consistent across the team.
